Promising Summer

I hope you are all heading into this summer with as much joy in life as I am experiencing. (Stress and all)  This time of year really sings to my creative side. We are going on nature walks, planning camping trips, getting my wild boys OUTSIDE. All the while I plan projects, take inspiration photos, and wait patiently for every nap time.

It is taking me much, much longer to finish everything, winter is really my time to sew, but I try not to complain and find the positives. I get to catch up on all those books I have been saving up. :-)

I did manage to finish quilting my Bloom Bloom Pow, no binding just yet but I want to share it anyway. This was a major lesson in why the cheap fabric is cheap. I used some cheap broadcloth from my shelf for part of the backing and it was a nightmare to quilt. Quality is important and worth every extra dollar.

The green section rippled and bunched and rippled, it was rough. It was a valuable lesson though. Considering that this is my largest quilt ever quilted on my home machine, I am happy. :-)

Happy creating this week everyone!

Time Flies

Time flies when your having fun!  Its been 16 days since my last post and I didn't even notice the time flying by around me.  My mom was here for a visit after a whole year of not seeing her!  We laughed and talked and best of all CRAFTED!!  It was a blast!  She is a Stampin' Up Demonstrator so she does more paper crafts while I do more with fabrics.   I have to admit that I have added paper crafts to my endless list of crafty hobbies.

I learned how to quill paper and stamp. The best part is like any craft you can incorporate them all together. I pulled out my paints that I use for art quilts and added a little touch of life to my butterfly on my first stamped card....
I also made this little Box for a lady at my quilt guild. I heard her mention that she loves Iris's and she was soooo sweet and welcoming to me.

Ohh, I almost forgot to tell you... My mom brought my very first quilt with her so I could get some photos. I had assembled the quilt top and then gave it to her years ago.  She had it quilted recently and I am now sewing on the binding and label.   I'll have a picture in my next post.   Hope you all have a great weekend.

May Day and Joining in overload!

Happy May!  These last few months have been really special, and I'm sure this one will be as well!  My Mom is coming to visit next week!  It's been a year and I am beyond excited.  She is my biggest supporter and best friend.  I can't wait for her to get here, she of course is planning to spend every second with my boys, but I'll get her in my sewing room at some point ;)

You know that feeling on the 1st of a month when you realize ALL of the Block of the Month's that you have joined are updated?  lol    I am spending the next TWO days making them.   No one can call me a procrastinator!

Now, here's my NewFO list for my Cat Patches NewFO linky party.

In April I started these new projects:

1. Bloom Bloom Pow : A quilt-along at Freshly Pieced
{Don't mind the terrible photo, this is just a sneak-peek of the top so far.}
2. A paper piecing quit-along at Quiet Play
There are two scissor blocks...I couldn't decide if I liked the first and made another.

3.   Bags, Bags, Bags.   I am designing and sewing multiple bag, purse, and wallet patterns and building an inventory for a store coming in 2014.

Thats it for April!  I'm going to Bring It in May!!!  lol

How cute is developmental Golf for 3-5 year olds!?  My little bug had a blast and the coaches were fantastic.

Happy creating everyone!

Nick of Time

I am linking up my Snip it Good Block for the And Sew on...BOM @ Quiet Play.  I am actually remaking this block today. I wasn't happy with my background choice.

What's really fun about these cute blocks is that on each one I am using paint to highlight different parts.  The seam ripper block had silver paint to make the metal look metal.   I am using a paint today on this scissor block to make the metal look really but still and dull steel.  Fun!  lol

See?  The background did not work out at all with the many seam lines.

TGIF!

It's been two weeks to the day since I have posted. My mother-in-law was visiting and MAN! is she a shopper.  We were out all day everyday for her whole visit.   I still found the time to sew of course, like any of us crazy quilters would.
I made some awesome tote bags.  I am especially proud of them because the design is all mine.

There's one more but I didn't get a photo before my MIL took it home :)  I was pretty excited over figuring out the sunk in zipper and liner zipper pocket.

Anyway Happy Friday! The linky buttons are all to the right... I have to go get caught up on Bloom Bloom Pow.   Cutting and sewing the blocks!

Friday! Finally!

I'm so happy it is Friday! This week has dragged on long enough.   My happy sewing machines are running non-stop today.  Can you smell the machine oil burning?  Yum. haha  There are a lot of linkies going on today...Here goes:

The strip piecing instructions came out for Bloom Bloom Pow yesterday and it's taking me longer then I thought. I used my stash so my strips are in both sizes, not a big deal sewing is fun! {Insert my WHOOP WHOOP! here}

I am of course still free motion quilting on my wall hanging. There's about a hundred starts and stops, lots of thread changes, but it is great practice!

My Cala Lily was my BIG finish this week.   I won't go posting the photo for a third time {that's too obnoxious}  Here's a link to that post instead.  I am linking this one up to the  Link a Finish Friday.

Here's a little planning on my hexies...I am trying to pick a background fabric...any thoughts on which?   I think I could have found something better even, but I am using my stash and that's that. lol   Help!  On white or beige?

Technically it was laying on my carpet, but I think it qualifies for the Design Wall  weekend linky. :)

Since there aren't enough linkies in this post already, I am going to go ahead and linkup to the Find a friend Friday linky party @ Sew Man Ways.

Whew. Wore myself out with all the joining.  Have a great weekend everyone :)

WIP Quilting

For WIP Wednesday @ Freshly Pieced I am working on my brightly colored wall quilt. Quilting is taking forever!!!  This was always meant for my sewing room wall, and being new-ish to FMQ, I decided to make it practice for design patterns.  So basically,  I am doing a few different patterns in the different squares and triangles.   I am not sure how the outcome will look, but I need this practice badly!  Heres a peek:

I am linking this post to the My Favorite Things Linky--theme Star Quilts this week! Button on the right.....

I had a great finish this week as well! My Cala Lily from the Painted Pictorial Quilts class on Craftsy. Highly recommend the class, by the way.

Tomorrow is the strip piecing post for Bloom Bloom Pow!  Change to a piecing foot! :)

I painted it!

I couldn't wait to post today and show my finished lily from the Painted Pictorial Quilt class on Craftsy.com.    No fuss....Here's the Before and After.

Pretty cool what a little paint and thread can do!  I am beyond hyped over painting fabrics and can't wait to start the second project!

Thanks for looking. This is a linkup with Stitch by Stitch.

Have a great day!

FMQ Friday with Sounds of Ripping

Yeah, I'm ripping. Ripping, ripping and more ripping.   You are free to judge or at least find a bit of sympathy for me cause ripping is not FUN!    My Express Your Love went to some dark places in my heart and it was headed for the pile where UFO's never return. I am very attached to her, so letting her go would have been sad for me. So, instead of giving up {I am NOT a quitter!}  I am ripping the parts I hate instead.  Its slow going, I probably wouldn't do this for any other project.  It will be worth it when shes fixed and beautiful again.

I am sparing you a photo of the carnage for now.

The GOOD news today is that I should be ready to quilt on my Cala Lily from the Painted Pictorial Quilts class on Craftsy.com.   The teacher is so fantastic and is leaving me with so much confidence. Creating art quilts with fabrics and paints has really stuck a cord in me and I feel like something has clicked into place that I was missing!  I can't wait to start my own projects.

Here's a little peek at my practice leaf  {the bottom leaf} I can't believe how much it came to life! and that was just my first practice!  :)

NewFo Challange and Mommy Guilt

I wanted to start out talking about Mommy guilt today.  I have it bad and can't seem to shake it.  There are days were it is too easy to feel inadequate, like a failure, and just in general like a terrible Mommy.  Days where Disney channel played for 4 straight hours while I guilty sewed my heart out, or the pile of fruit snack wrappers piled up because it's the only thing that distracts the kiddies long enough to just finish this binding!   Surely, these are not too serious in the long scheme of things, but that little guilty voice in my head won't stop nagging me.

On the Bright side: I wasn't scolding, or yelling, or losing my cool since my kids were TV zombies with full tummies. :p  They will probably live through it, remembering those days as fun, but I will always wish I had played with them all day instead.

Now back to quilt talk!  The Newfo Challange from March is going on and here are all my New and Unfinished projects:

1. Painted Cala Lily from the Painted Pictorial Quilts Class on Craftsy.  Just started this one last weekend so there are no photos yet :/ Just some Practice Strokes.

2.  Purse for sister-in-law. Animal Print can really grow on you. Almost Finished.

3. My first Hexies!
4. Practice quilting designs for my wall hanging.
I drew this little coffee mug, a must on my sewing room wall. :)

5. Another Hearts and Feathers, purely for skill building in Trapunto with water-soluble thread for less thread buildup then my first try.
6.  Fabric Pull for Bloom Bloom Pow {I am including this in my NewFO's because that's how excited I am for this quilt-along}

I have a few more projects going on {as if these aren't enough} but they are Top-Secret.  Mother's Day is coming soon afterall.  :)

I am also linking up today with Stitch by Stitch

Happy April Everyone!

Sew lux Charm Linky

There's a Charm Square project linky going on at Sew Lux Fabrics and I wanted in!!   Finding projects I have made with Charm squares is very easy, they happen to be my favorite things.  My thread catcher bags large and small were both based off of charm squares.  Though I mixed a few different fabric groups.

Not to mention my sewing machine cover:
I know I have posted these previously, but I can't miss a Sew lux giveaway!  DROOL. :)

Slowly Quilted

You know it's bad when your crafty to-do is 11 items long!!  Overwhelming to be sure.  I have my Mother's and sister's birthdays coming in May, there's a little time, but never enough.

The Bloom Bloom Pow Quilt Along at Freshly Pieced is starting in a few days and I am beyond excited!  I had to pull my fabrics from my stash for this one. Speaking of which, this is a WIP linkup over there. :)

Today I am quilting my wall hanging, SLOWLY but surely. I am really playing with this one, which is great for FMQ practice!  Hope to have some progress to show off on Friday's linkup.
Have fun creating this week!!!

In love with Hexies!

It's been awhile since I have posted, my little one has had a stomach bug, poor baby.  Instead of your normal 24-48 hours, the little turd was sick for 7 days!  It was so sad and awful.  The good news is that this is my chunky butt, so not eating for a week didn't seem to hurt him. Hehe.

The good thing that came from this week is that I started a new project in my desperate need to have my hands working while cuddling my bundle of germs.  (again...hehe).   Hexies!  My first hexie project and it turns out, I Love Them!  I made them pretty small from what I have seen. The sides are just under an inch; they had to be because of the fabric I am using which was cut into HST's for a failed project a few years ago.  This is the perfect way to bring this lovely fabric back to life.

Enough rambling from me!  Here's a sneak peak. :-)

Guild Meetings and Bloglovin'

I went to my first guild meeting finally!  What fun!!!  I met some wonderful ladies and got so inspired to start seriously thinking about quilt shows.  I am starting a new piece today to enter in an upcoming show.

I am sewing binding on my Baby puzzler today after quilting my first ever feathers. I had fun quilting these, it seems that big loopy patterns agree with me. Sneak Peek!
I also thought I would go ahead and claim my blog on BlogLovin'------- Follow my Blog on Bloglovin

FMQ Friday

Free Motion Quilting is dominating my sewing room right now. I am working on my Baby Puzzler and did a stiple over the puzzle section.  Next, I plan to practice some feathers and then do a feather border around the outside.  My stiple was on a 1/2" scale, but I think I should have done it bigger.  To be honest, this is the first quilt I have quilted on my Janome 1600p. I was just happy to get through it, and I don't think I blinked once :)

I am also working on my Sugar Block Club blocks today and trying to finish the paper pieced February Block.  It's so much easier then I thought it would be. {I have never paper pieced before}  I enjoyed the paper piecing process, though  feel that it wastes a little fabric.

Have a great weekend!

Baby Puzzler

My husband's close friend (a soldier he did  his Iraq tours with) is having a baby!  My first thought was baby quilt!  I wanted it to be special and thought it was a perfect time to use my puzzle blocks.  I couldn't find a pattern for a puzzle quilt anywhere so I made my own.
Once I have then kinks worked out, I'll make a tutorial in case someone wants to make it.
I want to finish piecing today, my Janome gets back tomorrow!  All I will want to do is fmq after that :-)

Have fun creating this week!

Dash of Color

For all of those with extra-supportive husbands, do they stick their nose in your sewing room?

Mine is full of suggestions and critiques... good ones mostly, and appreciated, but weird right?   Hehe. He named the star quilt below,  and helped when I designed the dash sashing.  Right before he went back to NHL 13 on the PS3 :p. He wanted me to write the last so everyone would knows he's a tough guy who likes video games.

Here's my finished top. I may need to stop sharing pictures of every step of the process so the finished pictures will be more fun. I can't wait to quilt this!!!

Anything Goes With Marelize

It is Monday again and a Linky Party @ Stitch by Stitch is happenin'

Haha ^^ I felt nerdy typing that.  Speaking of Nerdy...I am in the middle of a Stargate SG1 Marathon. Trying to get through Season 1 as fast as possible though, the show started out super cheesy.

This week is another week full of too many projects and not enough time. Sometimes I only sew one piece of a block together before having to stop again {kids under 5}  That means that my wall quilt is still in the works.  Hopefully today I can get the solid borders on and start the pieced border.  Finishing this is my priority so when my Janome gets back,I can start quilting.

Sneak peek
I picked up this fabric for a secret birthday surprise...I saw this fabric and literally obsessed over it all night long Saturday.  Sunday morning, I had it in my lap as soon as JoAnne's opened. Here's a hint....It may turn into an apron. Funky!!!

Just for fun: My angelfish spawned over the weekend and all day yesterday they moved the hatched eggs to a new leaf.  The pair is doing an amazing job.
Happy Birthday new Angels!

Have Fun creating!  I am also Linking up for the first time over at Sew Many Ways.

FMQ Cheat

I guess it is cheating a little but I am not FMQ-ing this week...not YET anyway.  I am Dye-ing fabric to be quilted.  It counts for FMQ Friday, right? Well, I linked-up with Leah Day anyway!!! :)

I was peeking through my older copies of QuiltingArts from back before I ever quilted anything and only dreamed of having the skills to create art like the featured pieces.  I came across a piece called Daisy Chain by Jenny Rolfe that is deceptively simple and decided to make a version of it.  Her techniques were very loosely outlined, which is good because I won't be trapped into trying to make an exact copy. I can just take the basic inspiration and Fly.

I took a white wholecloth and some spritz bottles full of dye and just went nutso on it.  I used the  spritz bottle specifically because I was blending 4 colors and wanted the results to be more blended then uniform.

I used purple around the edges with a lot of dark blue, a light spritzing of these covered the whole cloth as well.  Then towards the center I used a turquoise and lime green {Lime green shows up a lot around here}   The point was for the center to be slightly lighter then the edges. 'Slightly' being a key word here.

The greens don't quite show up in the dim garage lighting.  They will when this is dried and in the sunlight I hope :)

I'll be using paints, fabric pastels and thread to really play with colors on this. I am also cutting my own stamp to use for the flower chain down the center.  I'll post on my progress as I go.  It will either be great or an epic fail, but learning is the key here I think!

Sorry for the Many words!

NewFo February

Last Day of February.........Always a great time to join a Linky party and Giveaway!!! YAY!  Thanks to Cat Patches of course for starting this monthly Party!

So for my new projects with no finishes....

A pin cushion caddy.  I have been seeing pin cushion caddies in photos all over blogger.  Most of the searches I did, came up with a caddy from the book 'Seams to Me'.  All of the reviews however said the measurements in the book are off, and everyone had to "tweak" it.  Well, I am NOT spending money on a book with bad measurements.  So here I am designing my own.

It's kind of a sad day, my brand spanking new Janome 1600p is on its way back to the store.  The knee lift had a weak spot or something and BROKE OFF in the machine.   The customer service guy said he had never heard of that happening.
The silver lining: I can use this time to piece my wall quilt and work on smaller projects.  I feel like I may need some borders or something to break up the pattern a bit. I'm winging it. lol Suggestions welcome. :)

Have fun creating today!

Major Monday Madness

Whew, what a weekend!  My poor 15 month old has an ear infection for the first time which was a nightmare.  Zero sleep and lots of pitiful crying.  Last night he finally slept through the night and is running around with a big smile, so things are looking up.  That does mean that I didn't touch my sewing machines very much, and today I am ready to stitch!

Monday Linkies:

One of my favorite bloggers- Marelize - hosts a weekly linky party starting every Monday here...Stitch by Stitch

I also  have been really enjoying the themed party at My Favourite Things.  I didn't link up last week for lack of a item fitting the theme, but this week is all about Log Cabins.  One of my first quilt tops that I made was a crazy log cabin.  I call it Starry Night, after Van Gogh's painting, however in hindsight, the fabric choices are not what I would use now.

My seam ripper was in use this morning already, but for good reasons...  With my new sewing tables, my sewing machine cover no longer fits my Brother, so I took it apart to recreate.  No wasting!

I would like to throw in a HUGE THANKSSSSS  to VICKIE @ More Stars in Comanche for hosting the giveaway that I won.  I can run on weeks on the simple joy of winning something like this.  I can't wait to pass that joy forward.   This is the BEAUTIFUL fabric Vickie sent me... Flirt by Sandy Gervais

While I am at it, here's a photo of my latest aquascape, I was making an attempt at Iwagumi, but I think I may have missed the mark a bit. I find the rock placement pleasing regardless. This little nano tank is in my sewing room and will be home to a hoard of shrimp and maybe a small school of nano-friendly fishes.

Have a great day creating!!!
